We continue our countdown to #1 with Westview High School tight end Taylor McNamara a physically gifted prospect who is receiving intense interest from all across the country.
#9 Taylor McNamara
Position: Tight End
Schools Considering: Arizona, Ohio State, Maryland, Kentucky, Florida State
NFL Comparison: Todd Heap
The Class of 2012 has probably the biggest group of elite tight ends of the last 10 classes of California football. Leading that elite group? Westview High School's Taylor McNamara. McNamara has all the size needed to play at the highest level of D1 football and is rapidly improving skill set makes him a guy who could walk on a campus and contribute right away.
As a pass catcher coming out of the tight end position, McNamara shows great hands but even better awareness. He runs his routes precisely and fluidly but has really shown a knack for finding the soft spot in the defense. Taylor knows how to find open space and makes himself a very easy target for his quarterbacks.
Taylor has soft hands and does a very good job of looking the ball all the way into his chest. He catches all the balls he is supposed to and has shown the ability to catch balls outside his body. Once he does have the ball, Taylor is an excellent open field runner. He uses that 6'5 235 pound frame to be an aggressive, attacking runner who isn't afraid to bowl over somebody in his path. Taylor's size and skill set make him a guy who is almost impossible to stop in 5 yard flat or over the middle. He's too big for cornerbacks and too quick for linebackers. Taylor McNamara is a true matchup nightmare.
McNamara is an incredible blocker who could easily be used as an offensive tackle if he weren't so skilled as a pass catcher. He is laterally quick enough to pick up linebackers blitzing from the outside and shows a propensity for contact that coaches love to see. He goes right at his man and his immense strength in his forearms combined with the great push he gets from his legs makes him a guy who records plenty of 'pancakes.'
Taylor McNamara is everything your looking for in a tight end. A physical gamer who can do it all and a guy who gives his Westview high school team an advantage every time he steps on the field.
The next level?: Taylor is getting recruited by a wide variety of schools from all across the country. Prestigious football universities Ohio State, Florida State and Arizona have already offered with Kentucky and Maryland pursuing his services as well. Those are five different conferences going after a player from California, you rarely see that.
Expect McNamara to attract many more offers and this is a guy you should keep an eye on. Expect a big senior season from Taylor.
