Commitment Analysis: Katin Reinhardt

In the spring Katin Reinhardt de-committed from USC and saw schools across the nation start to aggressively chase his services. Today, he decided to stay close to home, committing to UNLV in what is a huge, huge recruiting win for the Running Rebels. Reinhardt is widely seen as a top 100 player in the country and now that his college destination is clear lets take a look at the impact Reinhardt will make in Vegas.

 

 

 

Commitment Impact Level: Extremely High 

 

 

Katin Reinhardt is a super star in the making. Katin is a deadly scorer. He thrives with the ball in his hands and is very difficult to stop on isolation plays, especially from the perimeter. An incredible ball handler, Katin is as effective going left as he is going right which helps keep his defender off-balance. His handles and quick first step allow him to get into the lane with ease where he can finish around the basket with both hands and score easily thanks to an array of floaters, layups and a solid midrange game. When driving the lane he really attacks the basket aggressively and his strong leaping ability gives him the confidence to really attack the rim.

 

 

Part of what makes Reinhardt so dangerous off the dribble is that defenders know if you give him any space on the perimeter he will bury jump shot after jump shot. Katin has an incredibly quick release with a nice high release point. He is so fluid into his jumper and can pull up off the dribble extremely effectively. He has great range and can stroke it consistently from deep. While effective as an isolation player, Reinhardt has shown the ability to hit jumpers coming off screens and his pull up game in transition is very strong.

 

 

Combine these skills with impressive size and strength for a shooting guard and your left with an unstoppable high school player who has a game that projects to translate very well to the college level. But Reinhardt's commitment also helps legitimize UNLV as a home for star recruits. Katin had plenty of options but his eagerness to commit to UNLV sends a message to other elite players that UNLV is a top tier basketball school. The Running Rebels have seen their program really start to blossom the last few years and the signing of Reinhardt shows that that trend is likely to continue.

 

 

 

Chance at early playing time: High

 

 

With stars Oscar Bellfield and Chace Stanback graduating after this year Reinhardt will at least have a chance to come in right away and contribute as a scorer off the bench. But Katin has a legitimate shot at being a starter his freshman year in Vegas, and even if he doesn't start he definitely figures to see significant playing time by the end of his freshman year.  One of the things that make Reinhardt such an intriguing prospect is that he has a college ready body and isn't likely to wear down over the course of his first year playing D1 like some high school kids do.

 

 

 

Subplot to watch out for: Xavier Johnson

 

Reinhardt's close friend and teammate star small forward Xavier Johnson is also being heavily recruited by UNLV and Katin figures to try and bring his close friend with him to Vegas. Johnson already had UNLV in his top five before Katin's commitment and this can only help the Rebels chances at landing Xavier.
