Cali High Sports is coming out with the best and most accurate list of the top Cali players for each sport. We add basketball to our rankings where an extremely talented 2011 class features maybe the best crop of athletes California has seen in years.
We continue our countdown to number 1 with St. John Bosco High baller Cezar Guerrero. Guerrero had to sit out his junior season after transferring and has suffered through some injuries in his young career. However Cezar is healthy now and showing Cali and the entire country what he can do.
#22 Cezar Guerrero
School: Saint John Bosco
Position: Point Guard
Height: 6’0
Weight: 170
Schools Considering: UCLA, St. John's, Arizona, UTEP
Club Team: Belmont Shore
Cezar Guerrero first gained notoriety as an electric point guard back when he was just a 9th grader. Ballislife.com posted a Guerrero highlight video that became a YouTube sensation with over 700,000 views.
That video gave Guerrero tons of hype and sent notice out to every other quick, ball handling point guard in California that Guerrero would be a force to be reckoned with.
Since then Guerrero's hype might not have exploded but he has grown by leaps and bounds as a player and has taken his place as one of the best point guards in California.
Cezar has unbelievable quickness-he's maybe the quickest player in all of California-and uses his speed and agility to blow by his man consistently. Guerrero has great handles and combined with his speed is incredibly hard to stay in front of.
In transition Guerrero is an absolute nightmare to cover. He can stop on a dime, change directions with ease and finish at the basket with either hand. He isn't selfish on the break, usually making the smart pass rather then trying to force himself to the bucket and risk an offensive foul.
Guerrero's passing may be his best attribute. He has incredible floor vision and is a more then willing passer who does a great job of penetrating and dishing. Nobody sets up more easy baskets for his big men then Cezar. Guerrero also has a very nice mid-range jumper and if he continues to improve his deep ball he could become an unstoppable force on the offensive end.
On the defensive side of the ball Cezar uses his speed to stay in front of his man or catch up if he gets beat, and his quick hands let to lotos of steals. At the high school level Cezar is a solid defender but should try and improve his on ball defense and close outs this season.
The next level?: Cezar is one of those players who needs more seasoning and the more he plays the better he will become. I expect Cezar to jump up our rankings as the season goes along and Cezar is definitely a guy who could really blossom when he hits the next level.
Guerrero is definitely a top Division 1 talent and would be a major score for any Pac 10 school. Guerrero reminds me of Jerome Randle, but at almost 6 feet he has enough size that he could be even more dynamic then the former All Pac 10 Cal guard. Guerrero could grow into a potential All American type player with the right coaching and it isn't out of the question to say he has NBA potential.
